Chief Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, the revered Muslim cleric who gained national and international recognition for sheltering hundreds of Christians during the 2018 Plateau State attacks, has died at the age of 92.

Abubakar, the Chief Imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, passed away after a lifetime of service marked by courage, compassion, and commitment to peace.

He became widely known in June 2018 when violent attacks erupted in parts of Plateau State. At great personal risk, the cleric opened his mosque and his home to protect fleeing Christians, sheltering over 260 people from armed assailants. His actions were credited with saving many lives during the crisis.

Despite threats from attackers who demanded that he hand over those seeking refuge, Imam Abubakar reportedly stood his ground, insisting that the people under his protection would not be harmed.

His heroic act drew praise across religious, political, and international communities. He received several commendations, including recognition from foreign governments and interfaith organizations, for promoting peace and religious tolerance.

Tributes have continued to pour in from Nigerian leaders, religious groups, and civil society organizations, describing him as a symbol of unity, humanity, and moral courage.

Chief Imam Abdullahi Abubakar is remembered as a powerful example of how compassion can transcend religious and ethnic divides, even in times of violence.
