Rivers Court Halts Impeachment Proceedings Against Governor Fubara
By Erewunmi Peace
A Rivers State High Court has issued an interim injunction stopping the impeachment process initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.
The court order restrains the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, its members, and other relevant officials from taking further steps toward the impeachment while the matter is pending before the court. It also prevents the Chief Judge of the state from receiving or acting on any impeachment notice related to the governor and his deputy.
The injunction followed separate suits filed by Governor Fubara and his deputy, challenging the legality of the impeachment move.
The court ruled that maintaining the status quo was necessary to avoid irreversible actions before the determination of the substantive case.
The matter has been adjourned to a later date for further hearing.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly has insisted that it will continue to explore constitutional options, arguing that impeachment is a legislative function. The development comes amid ongoing political tension in the state.
The situation remains fluid as legal and political actors await the court’s final decision.
