EFCC Reveals How It Stopped Contractor From Installing Substandard Transmission Lines

By Erewunmi Peace

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has revealed how the agency prevented a contractor from installing substandard transmission lines in Nigeria’s power sector.

Olukoyede disclosed that the incident occurred in 2024 during a project under the Ministry of Power, where a contractor allegedly attempted to use fake and inferior electrical materials.

According to him, investigations by the EFCC uncovered the irregularities before the materials were deployed, prompting immediate intervention to stop the project.

He explained that the use of such substandard equipment could have caused severe damage to the country’s power infrastructure and posed serious safety risks to lives and property.

Following the discovery, the EFCC reportedly wrote to the Ministry of Power, recommending that the contractor be blacklisted to prevent further involvement in government projects.

The EFCC chairman made this known during a meeting with stakeholders in the power sector, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to tackling corruption and ensuring accountability in critical national projects.

The revelation highlights ongoing efforts by anti-corruption agencies to safeguard public resources and improve the quality of infrastructure across the country.
