Atiku Appoints Kenneth Okonkwo as Official Spokesperson

Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election, Atiku Abubakar, has appointed Nollywood actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo as his official spokesperson. The appointment comes as the opposition coalition intensifies preparations for the 2027 presidential election.
Okonkwo announced the appointment in a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, expressing gratitude to Atiku for the confidence reposed in him. He described the appointment as both an honour and a responsibility, pledging to work diligently in advancing the campaign’s vision for Nigeria.
“I give God all the glory for being appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his spokesperson. I thank His Excellency for the immense confidence reposed in me,” Okonkwo said while acknowledging the significance of his new role.
The former Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council spokesperson noted that Atiku’s decision demonstrated a leadership style built on dialogue, consultation, and inclusion. According to him, rather than taking offence when associates express differing opinions, the former vice president prefers engagement and compromise in resolving political disagreements.
Okonkwo revealed that before accepting the appointment, he held discussions with Atiku and other senior leaders of the African Democratic Congress on issues affecting the South-East. He stated that concerns relating to the region’s political interests were discussed and adequately addressed within the realities of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the party’s broader political strategy.
He also expressed appreciation to several political figures, including Dr. Kashim Imam, former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Dr. Ekene Onwuka, for their contributions toward strengthening the party and promoting internal unity ahead of the next general election.
The appointment is particularly notable because it comes only weeks after Okonkwo publicly criticised the party’s choice of vice-presidential candidate, arguing that the decision did not adequately reflect the interests of the South-East. Despite those criticisms, Atiku proceeded to appoint him as spokesperson, a move that Okonkwo said reflected the former vice president’s willingness to accommodate differing opinions within the party.
Political observers view the appointment as part of ongoing efforts by Atiku and the ADC to consolidate their campaign structure and strengthen communication ahead of the 2027 elections. Okonkwo is expected to serve as one of the principal public voices of the campaign, articulating its policies, responding to public issues, and engaging with the media throughout the election period.
