“I’m Contesting for President of Nigeria and I’m Qualified” — Peter Obi Confirms 2027 Bid

By Erewunmi Peace

In a recent appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, former Governor Peter Obi—Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate—clearly stated his intention to run for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2027. He also affirmed his belief in his qualification for the position.

“I’m going to contest for the President of Nigeria, and I believe I’m qualified,” Obi asserted, refuting swirling rumours of a vice-presidential ticket under the PDP’s Atiku Abubakar .

Responding to speculation around a possible alignment with Atiku Abubakar, Obi denied any such arrangement:

“Nobody has ever discussed with me whether to be A or B or C,” he emphasized .

A spokesperson for his media team reaffirmed the commitment, confirming that his run is for the top office—not a deputy role .

This declaration follows earlier statements in May and June, where Obi openly expressed his intent to contest under the Labour Party and suggested he’d serve only a single term if elected .

CONTEXT

Obi’s decision comes amid evolving coalition talks among opposition parties, including the newly-formed Africa Democratic Congress (ADC), aimed at challenging the ruling APC in 2027 . Despite discussions around potential alliances, Obi remains focused on his own presidential path.

SIGNIFICANCE

As a prominent figure in Nigeria’s ongoing political realignment, Obi’s formal announcement sets the stage for a competitive 2027 race. His qualifications—administrative experience as Anambra State governor (2006–2014), business background, and growing national profile—make him a strong contender.
