Senate Recommends ₦200M Compensation for Family of Toddler Killed in NDLEA Raid

By Erewunmi Peace

The Nigerian Senate has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to approve a compensation package of ₦200 million for the family of two-year-old Ivan Onosereba Omhonrina, who was tragically killed during a botched raid by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Delta State on July 13, 2023.

The resolution followed a motion presented by Senator Ede Dafinone (APC, Delta Central), highlighting the grief and trauma suffered by the family as a result of the incident.

During the Senate session, lawmakers observed a minute of silence in memory of the toddler and unanimously agreed that the NDLEA must take responsibility for the tragic outcome of the operation.

In addition to the ₦200 million compensation, the Senate also urged the NDLEA to fund overseas medical treatment for Ivan’s younger brother, Eromonsele Omhonrina, who sustained a serious eye injury during the same raid.

What Happened?

The NDLEA had stormed the family’s residence in Okpanam, Delta State, during an operation targeting suspected drug dealers. However, a stray bullet fired by NDLEA operatives struck and killed Ivan, while his younger sibling was severely injured.

The tragic event sparked national outrage, with human rights advocates and civil society groups demanding justice and accountability.

Senate’s Position

The Senate stressed that no child should suffer such a fate and emphasized the need for government agencies to act with professionalism and accountability.

Senator Dafinone, in his motion, stated:

“This tragic event was not just avoidable, it was a failure of procedure, training, and care for human life. Compensation cannot bring Ivan back, but it is a step toward justice.”

The Senate’s appeal now awaits executive action from President Tinubu.
