Female Undergraduate Fakes Her Own Kidnapping in Anambra to Extort Family

By Erewunmi Peace

A 28-year-old female undergraduate of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has been arrested by the Anambra State Police Command for allegedly faking her own kidnapping in an attempt to extort money from her family.

According to police reports, the suspect, whose name was withheld for security reasons, staged the act with the help of a male accomplice in a lodge located in Awka. The duo demanded a ₦10 million ransom from her relatives. After tense negotiations, the amount was reduced, and the victim’s family reportedly paid ₦1 million—unknowingly into her personal bank account.

The state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, confirmed the arrest, stating that police operatives acted on credible intelligence to track the suspects and unravel the deception. “The young woman confessed to masterminding the fake abduction to raise funds for her boyfriend’s business venture,” CP Itam disclosed.

The suspects are currently in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Public Reaction and Legal Implications

The incident has sparked outrage across social media, with many calling for stricter penalties for false crime reporting. Legal experts warn that such hoaxes are punishable under Nigerian law, including charges of conspiracy, fraud, and public mischief.

Security analysts also noted the growing trend of individuals—particularly youths—faking abductions for monetary gain or attention. They urged families and institutions to provide better support systems and mental health awareness to curb such risky behaviors.

Police Advisory

The Anambra State Police Command continues to warn the public against criminal pranks and fake kidnappings, stressing that such actions waste valuable law enforcement resources and could lead to severe legal consequences.
