Nigeria Bigger Than PENGASSAN – Vice President Shettima

By Erewunmi Peace

Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has stated that the nation’s interests must come before those of any group or organization, stressing that “Nigeria is bigger than the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).”

Speaking at the 31st Nigerian Economic Summit (NES31) held in Abuja, Shettima emphasized the need for collective responsibility in addressing the country’s economic and industrial challenges.

“Nigeria is greater than PENGASSAN. Nigeria is greater than each and every one of us,” the Vice President declared.

Shettima made the remark while responding to ongoing tensions between PENGASSAN and the Dangote Refinery, following disagreements over labour matters and union recognition within the new refinery facility.

He urged labour unions and corporate entities to act in the nation’s best interest and avoid actions that could hinder economic growth or disrupt industrial harmony.

“We must learn to put the country first. No individual, union, or institution should hold the entire nation to ransom. This is a time for collaboration, not confrontation,” he added.

The Vice President reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to fostering dialogue with labour unions while maintaining reforms aimed at stabilizing the economy and attracting investment.

His comments come amid growing debate over the role of labour unions in national development and concerns about balancing workers’ rights with the country’s economic priorities.

The 31st Nigerian Economic Summit, themed “The Reform Imperative: Building a Prosperous and Inclusive Nigeria by 2030,” brought together government officials, business leaders, and policymakers to discuss strategies for achieving sustainable economic growth.
