Former INEC Chairman Warns Politicians Against “Win-At-All-Costs” Mentality

By Erewunmi Peace

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, has cautioned Nigerian politicians against the growing “win-at-all-costs” mentality that continues to undermine the credibility of the country’s electoral system.

Speaking during the joint graduation ceremony of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) and the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Abuja, Jega said the attitude of some politicians toward elections has turned democratic contests into a do-or-die affair.

“Our politicians must understand that leadership is about service, not self-interest. The desperation to win elections at all costs erodes public trust and weakens our democratic institutions,” Jega said.

The former INEC boss emphasized that this mindset often leads to violence, electoral malpractice, and loss of faith in democratic processes. He noted that unless the political class embraces fair play and transparency, Nigeria’s democracy would continue to face challenges.

Jega, who supervised the 2011 and 2015 general elections, urged stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, and security agencies, to collaborate in ensuring credible and peaceful elections in the future.

“Democracy can only thrive when elections are seen as contests of ideas, not as battles of survival,” he added.

His comments come at a time when concerns are growing about the conduct of upcoming off-cycle elections and internal party primaries across the country.

Observers say Jega’s warning serves as a timely reminder for politicians to prioritize the nation’s progress over personal ambition.
