Nigerian Army Dismisses Soldier After He Returned Fire at Boko Haram During Attack
By Erewunmi Peace
The Nigerian Army reportedly dismissed Private Isah Emmanuel from the 16th Brigade Garrison for defying orders to cease fire during a Boko Haram attack on 17 November 2025.
According to military sources cited by Tarakirivoice, troops came under intense assault by Boko Haram insurgents. During the skirmish, Emmanuel allegedly refused to obey a direct “ceasefire” command from his commanding officer, citing fears that halting fire would expose him and his comrades to grave danger.
The incident took place during a frontline engagement, in which Boko Haram fighters reportedly advanced under heavy fire.
Emmanuel is said to have maintained his position and continued firing sustained rounds at the insurgents, forcing them to retreat.
Despite his reported success in repelling enemy fire, the Army ruled that his actions constituted “disobedience to a standing order,” a serious violation of military discipline.
His dismissal has been formally documented: his Army number is listed as 22NA/83/7262.
Public Debate: The case has sparked a debate online and among military watchers. Some Nigerians are praising Emmanuel, suggesting he may have saved lives by refusing to stand down. Others argue that obedience to the chain of command is critical in the military.
Military Discipline: The Army’s decision underscores its commitment to enforcing discipline, even in high-risk combat situations. The charge filed against Emmanuel — disobedience to a standing order — reflects one of the military’s core rules of engagement.
Command Risks: Military analysts say the situation highlights the difficult balance soldiers face on the ground: survival instinct versus following orders. In asymmetric warfare — such as with Boko Haram — split-second decisions can mean life or death.
This incident is not isolated. Over the years, Nigerian soldiers have been dismissed for various reasons related to the Boko Haram conflict. For instance, the Army has previously sacked troops for abandoning their positions or for failing to perform military duty.
There have also been reports of frontline soldiers calling out challenges such as lack of ammunition and inadequate support.
Meanwhile, the insurgency remains a major security crisis: Islamist fighters, including Boko Haram and its splinter group ISWAP, have conducted repeated attacks on military bases in the northeast.
The Nigerian Army recently appointed a new commander in its ongoing fight against militant groups, signaling renewed efforts to regain control and restore stability.
