NAPTIP Rescues 23 Nigerian Youths Trafficked to Thailand for Cyber-Enabled Crimes

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has rescued and repatriated 23 young Nigerians who were trafficked to Thailand and forced into cyber-enabled criminal activities.
According to the agency, the victims were allegedly lured abroad with promises of lucrative job opportunities and scholarships. Upon arrival, however, they were reportedly coerced into participating in online fraud schemes, including romance scams and other internet-based financial crimes.
NAPTIP revealed that the trafficking network specifically targeted young Nigerians with computer and IT skills, exploiting their ambitions and desire for better opportunities overseas.
The rescue operation was carried out in collaboration with international partners and relevant authorities, including diplomatic support from the Nigerian Embassy in Bangkok. The victims have since been returned to Nigeria, where they are receiving necessary support and rehabilitation.
NAPTIP’s Director-General described the development as a troubling evolution in human trafficking trends, noting that criminal syndicates are increasingly leveraging digital platforms and international routes to exploit young people.
The agency reiterated its commitment to dismantling trafficking networks and urged Nigerians to verify overseas job offers thoroughly before traveling abroad.
