By Peace Erewunmi

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has reaffirmed his administration’s support for the 2026 Ikogosi Road Race, describing the event as an opportunity to promote youth empowerment, grassroots sports development and tourism in the state.

The 17.5-kilometre road race is scheduled to return as part of efforts to provide young people with opportunities to discover and develop their sporting talents.

Oyebanji said his administration would continue to support initiatives capable of creating opportunities for young people while promoting Ekiti State as a destination for sports and tourism.

The governor’s support is also expected to strengthen the grassroots nature of the competition by encouraging participation from athletes within Ekiti and beyond.

The Ikogosi Road Race is expected to attract athletes and sports enthusiasts while showcasing the natural and tourism potential of the Ikogosi area.

Beyond the sporting competition, organisers and stakeholders see the event as a platform for youth engagement, talent discovery and economic activity within the host community.

The race is part of the growing focus on using sports as a tool for youth development and community empowerment in Ekiti State.

The return of the Ikogosi Road Race has also generated interest among sports stakeholders, with expectations that the event will contribute to the development of athletics at the grassroots and provide a platform for emerging athletes to gain competitive experience.

The 2026 edition is scheduled for October 31, with stakeholders expressing optimism that the race will further establish Ikogosi and Ekiti State as important destinations for sporting events and tourism.
