Nigeria’s Foreign Reserves Surge to $52.5bn, Highest in 17 Years
By Peace Erewunmi
Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves have risen above $52.5 billion, reaching their highest level in 17 years, according to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The latest figure, recorded as of July 17, 2026, has also surpassed the CBN’s annual reserve target for the year.
The CBN attributed the increase to sustained foreign exchange inflows, renewed investor confidence and increased participation across different asset classes in the Nigerian economy.
The development comes alongside a strengthening of the naira, with the gap between the official exchange rate and rates in the Bureau De Change segment narrowing to below two per cent.
The CBN said the improvement reflects the impact of ongoing monetary and foreign exchange reforms introduced under Governor Olayemi Cardoso.
Among the reforms highlighted by the apex bank are measures aimed at improving transparency in the foreign exchange market, strengthening the banking sector and attracting greater foreign investment.
The growth in reserves provides Nigeria with a stronger external buffer and could improve the country’s ability to meet international payment obligations, support exchange-rate stability and withstand external economic shocks.
The development is also significant because Nigeria’s foreign reserves had faced pressure in previous years amid foreign exchange shortages, capital outflows and fluctuations in oil revenues.
However, the increase in reserves does not automatically translate into improved living standards for Nigerians. The broader impact will depend on how effectively the government manages the economy, maintains price stability and converts improved external buffers into sustainable economic growth.
The latest reserve milestone comes as the Federal Government continues to defend its economic reforms, while opposition figures and critics maintain that improvements in macroeconomic indicators must ultimately be reflected in lower living costs and better economic opportunities for citizens.
The $52.5 billion figure therefore represents a significant improvement in Nigeria’s external financial position, while also placing greater expectations on policymakers to sustain the gains and ensure that economic stability translates into tangible benefits for Nigerians.
