Intelligence Uncovers Fentanyl Production Threat in Ogun Forest as NDLEA Seeks More Support

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has raised concerns over the growing threat of illicit synthetic drug production in Nigeria following intelligence that uncovered clandestine drug-processing activities in forests across the South-West.
The warning comes after the agency dismantled a large-scale clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in Ijebu East, Ogun State, in May 2026.
The facility, which NDLEA described as an industrial-scale laboratory, was reportedly hidden deep inside the forest and was linked to a Nigerian-Mexican drug syndicate. The agency said the operation exposed the growing attempt by international drug cartels to establish Nigeria as a base for synthetic drug production.
NDLEA’s concerns were further heightened by the discovery of another industrial-scale methamphetamine laboratory in Tapa Village, Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo State, barely four weeks after the Ogun operation. The agency said the proximity of the two facilities suggested an attempt to turn the South-West into a synthetic-drug manufacturing hub.
The Oyo operation resulted in the arrest of five suspects, including a Mexican national identified by the NDLEA as a methamphetamine expert. Investigators also recovered precursor chemicals and sophisticated equipment used for large-scale drug production.
The NDLEA has continued to stress the importance of intelligence gathering and inter-agency cooperation in preventing drug cartels from expanding their operations in Nigeria.
The agency has also called for stronger support and resources to enable it to effectively track drug networks, dismantle clandestine laboratories and prevent the production and distribution of dangerous synthetic drugs.
According to the NDLEA, the discovery of laboratories hidden in remote forest locations demonstrates that drug syndicates are becoming more sophisticated in their attempts to evade law enforcement.
The agency has warned that Nigeria must not become a safe haven for international drug cartels, stressing that sustained intelligence-led operations will be required to prevent the country from becoming a major production hub for synthetic drugs.
The developments have renewed concerns about the availability of illicit synthetic substances in Nigeria and the need for stronger collaboration among security agencies, communities and international partners to tackle the threat.
