A severe rainstorm has wreaked havoc in Ijero‑Ekiti, Ekiti State, destroying over 200 buildings and displacing more than 500 residents.
The storm, which struck on February 11–12, 2026, affected homes, market stalls, religious centres, and public institutions, leaving many families homeless.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji expressed deep sympathy for those affected, describing the scale of the destruction as heartbreaking. State emergency management teams have begun assessments to support recovery and provide relief to victims.
Officials warn that while no fatalities have been reported yet, the storm’s impact highlights the urgent need for disaster preparedness and community support during the rainy season.
Residents and local authorities are now working together to rebuild homes and restore essential services, even as temporary shelters are being provided for displaced families.
“We are committed to supporting our people through this difficult time,” said a spokesperson for the governor, urging citizens to remain cautious during heavy rains.
