By Peace Erewunmi

The Federal Executive Council (FEC), presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has approved road construction and rehabilitation projects worth about ₦438 billion across Nigeria, alongside major highway and trailer park concessions.

The Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents after Wednesday’s FEC meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The Council considered about 15 memoranda submitted by various ministries, including seven from the Ministry of Works.

Full List of Approved Projects

  1. Ado-Ekiti–Iyin–Aramoko–Itawure–Osun Border Road, Ekiti State — ₦159.83 billion.
  2. Abeokuta–Iboro–Ilaro Road, Ogun State — ₦54.12 billion variation order for rehabilitation, including a change in pavement design from rigid concrete to asphalt.
  3. Port Harcourt–Eleme Junction–Onne Port Junction section of the East-West Road, Rivers State — ₦74.51 billion for reconstruction of the 15-kilometre section, with a nine-month completion period.
  4. Ado-Ekiti–Afe Babalola University Road, Ekiti State — ₦54.52 billion for Phase II rehabilitation.
  5. Ilara–Iselu Road, Ogun State — ₦94.24 billion for construction of Phases II–V, with a 24-month completion period.

The Council also approved public-private partnership (PPP) concessions covering highways and trailer parks.

  1. Dikko–Maje section of the Suleja–Minna Road, Niger State — ₦56.75 billion, under a 40-year concession.
  2. Lagos–Ibadan Expressway — ₦96.43 billion for a 25-year operation and maintenance concession.

The trailer park concessions are intended to provide properly developed parking facilities for heavy-duty vehicles and reduce the presence of trucks on major highways.

The approvals are part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to improve road infrastructure, ease movement of goods and people, and address some of the challenges affecting transportation and logistics across the country.

The projects are also expected to support economic activity by improving road connectivity between communities, commercial centres, ports and major industrial corridors.

According to the government, the PPP arrangements will allow private-sector participation in the development and management of key transport infrastructure while reducing pressure on public finances.

The scale of the approvals makes the projects significant to the Federal Government’s infrastructure agenda, particularly as Nigeria continues to seek better road networks and more efficient freight movement nationwide.
