The outcome of the August 15 Osun State governorship election is already shaping political calculations ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Governor Ademola Adeleke secured a second term after defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO.

Adeleke, who contested under the Accord Party, polled 511,067 votes, while Oyebamiji received 444,815 votes, giving the incumbent a winning margin of 66,252 votes.

The victory is particularly significant because the Osun election was the final major off-cycle governorship election before the 2027 presidential poll.

A Boost for the Opposition

Adeleke’s victory has given opposition politicians a fresh talking point as parties begin positioning themselves for 2027.

The result also makes Osun the only state currently controlled by the Accord Party and gives the opposition a notable electoral success in the South-West, a region widely regarded as politically important to the 2027 contest.

For the APC, however, Oyebamiji’s performance cannot be dismissed. He secured roughly 40 per cent of the votes cast, demonstrating that the ruling party retains substantial support across the state.

The margin of victory was nevertheless considerably wider than the 28,344-vote difference recorded between Adeleke and former Governor Gboyega Oyetola in the 2022 election.

How the Election Was Won

Adeleke’s victory was driven largely by strong performances in several areas considered Accord Party strongholds.

The governor won 19 of Osun’s 30 Local Government Areas, including Ede North, Ede South, Osogbo, Ife Central, Iwo, Ejigbo, Ifelodun, Odo-Otin, Ila and Ayedaade.

Oyebamiji, on the other hand, won 11 LGAs, including Ilesha East, Ife South, Boripe, Irepodun, Obokun and Olorunda.

The two major parties also presented contrasting campaign messages.

While Adeleke and the Accord Party focused heavily on continuity and workers’ welfare, the APC campaigned on the need for a change in leadership and highlighted the potential benefits of having a state government politically aligned with the federal administration.

What It Means for 2027

The Osun result is likely to feature prominently in political discussions as Nigeria moves towards 2027.

For opposition parties, the election provides evidence that the APC can be defeated in a South-West state, despite its control of the Federal Government and several states in the region.

For the APC, the result is a warning that its federal incumbency and political influence do not automatically translate into victory at the state level.

However, one state election cannot by itself determine the outcome of a presidential election.

The 2027 contest will involve different candidates, alliances, national issues and voter considerations across all six geopolitical zones.

The Osun election therefore offers political parties lessons rather than a guaranteed template for 2027.

APC Yet to Announce Its Next Move

Following the defeat, the Osun APC said it was studying the election results before deciding on its next course of action.

Meanwhile, Adeleke has already begun celebrating his re-election, including a thanksgiving service where he publicly expressed gratitude for the victory.

As the dust settles on the Osun election, attention is gradually shifting towards the larger political battle ahead.

The result has shown that the road to 2027 will likely be shaped by local political structures, voter turnout, candidate popularity, party alliances and the ability of political parties to convert national narratives into support at the grassroots.

For now, Adeleke remains in office, while both the APC and opposition forces have a fresh electoral result to study as they prepare for Nigeria’s next major political contest.
