Professor Chris Mustapha Nwaokobia has said he does not identify as either a Muslim or a Christian, despite having read the Quran six times.

Nwaokobia made the disclosure while explaining his religious background and the origin of the name “Mustapha,” which he said became part of his name in 2002.

According to him, his decision to study the Quran was driven by his interest in understanding different religious traditions rather than an indication that he had converted to Islam.

The professor said his familiarity with the Quran has allowed him to engage with Islamic teachings and perspectives, while maintaining that he does not consider himself a Muslim.

He also stated that he does not identify as a Christian.

His comments have generated reactions online, with some social media users urging him to embrace Christianity or Islam and others engaging in debate over religious identity and the importance of studying sacred texts.

One commenter, reacting to the report, wrote: “May the owner of Quran guide you to the right path. I prayed for you.”

Nwaokobia’s remarks have subsequently sparked discussions about religious identity, personal belief and whether studying or appreciating another faith’s scripture necessarily determines a person’s religious affiliation.

The professor’s position, as reported, is that his reading of the Quran and the adoption of the name Mustapha should not automatically be interpreted as evidence that he is a Muslim.
