Kidnapped Oyo Pupils, Teachers Regain Freedom After Nearly Two Months in Captivity
By Peace Erewunmi
The pupils, teachers, and school workers abducted by suspected bandits from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after spending more than 50 days in captivity. Their release brings relief to families, school authorities, and residents who had anxiously awaited their safe return.
The victims were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, when armed men attacked Community Grammar School, Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in Oriire Local Government Area. The attackers abducted dozens of pupils, teachers, and other school personnel, triggering widespread condemnation and renewed concerns over insecurity in schools.
According to reports, the victims were released after spending nearly two months in captivity. While details surrounding the circumstances of their freedom were not immediately disclosed, the development marks the end of a traumatic ordeal for the affected families and communities.
The abduction had sparked protests by parents, civil society groups, and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), while the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) declared an indefinite strike to demand intensified efforts by the government and security agencies to secure the victims’ release. The prolonged captivity had also disrupted academic activities in affected schools across the local government area.
Before the release, security agencies had announced the arrest of several suspects and alleged informants believed to have provided intelligence and logistical support to the kidnappers. Authorities had maintained that sustained intelligence-led operations were underway to secure the victims’ freedom and dismantle the criminal network behind the attack.
The successful release has been welcomed by parents, teachers, and residents, many of whom expressed gratitude to security personnel involved in the rescue efforts. However, stakeholders have also renewed calls for stronger security around schools, particularly in rural communities vulnerable to attacks by armed groups.
Education advocates have urged the Federal and Oyo State governments to strengthen the Safe Schools Initiative by improving school security infrastructure, increasing surveillance, deploying security personnel to vulnerable areas, and enhancing intelligence gathering to prevent future attacks on educational institutions.
The release of the abducted pupils and teachers ends weeks of uncertainty for their families. Attention is now expected to shift toward providing the survivors with medical care, psychological support, and counselling to help them recover from the trauma of their captivity and safely return to normal life.
