Veteran Yoruba oral poet, writer, actor, composer and renowned Ìjálá chanter, Chief Alabi Ogundepo, has died at the age of 84.

The Saki-born cultural icon reportedly passed away on Monday, August 24, 2026, after a lifetime dedicated to Yoruba literature, oral tradition and cultural preservation. His family announced his death in a statement signed by his daughter, Dupe Ogundepo-Falana.

Ogundepo was widely regarded as one of the enduring voices of Ìjálá, the traditional Yoruba hunters’ poetry characterised by chants, praise poetry, historical narratives and rich oral expression.

For more than five decades, he performed and promoted Ìjálá poetry through stage performances, radio and television, helping introduce Yoruba oral literature to wider audiences.

A Custodian of Yoruba Culture

Born in Saki, Oyo State, Ogundepo developed a distinctive poetic style influenced by the culture and dialect of the Oke-Ogun region.

Beyond Ìjálá, he was also recognised for his contributions to Yoruba oríkì, literature and other forms of traditional cultural expression.

His work extended to broadcasting, where he became associated with Radio Oyo and NTA Ibadan. He also produced the cultural programme Akiika for NTA Ibadan, using the platform to promote Yoruba language, history, traditions and oral literature.

He was also known for public service jingles, including the popular road-safety message, “Eso Pele Onimoto Rora Saare,” which helped make his voice familiar to audiences across the region.

Family Mourns Cultural Icon

In its statement, the Ogundepo family described his passing as a profound loss, while highlighting the legacy he left through his writings, relationships, values and contributions to society.

The family said that although they were mourning a beloved father, husband, grandfather, relative and friend, they remained comforted by the impact of his life’s work.

“Chief Alabi Ogundepo may have departed this world, but his voice, his poetry and the memories he created will continue to live on,” the family said.

Traditional Ruler Pays Tribute

The Okere of Sakiland, Oba Khalid Olabisi Oyedepo III, also expressed sadness over the death of the veteran cultural figure.

The monarch described Ogundepo as a distinguished custodian of Yoruba cultural heritage whose artistic activities contributed to the cultural identity of Saki.

He also noted Ogundepo’s contribution to the community, including his role in composing the Saki Anthem.

A Legacy Beyond Entertainment

Ogundepo’s death represents a significant loss to Yoruba oral literature and traditional arts.

At a time when many indigenous forms of storytelling face declining attention, his decades of work helped keep Ìjálá, Yoruba poetry and traditional narratives relevant across generations.

His voice, performances and writings served as a bridge between older Yoruba traditions and contemporary audiences.

With his passing, Nigeria has lost another important custodian of indigenous knowledge and cultural expression.

The family said funeral arrangements will be announced in due course, while requesting privacy and prayers as they mourn the veteran poet and cultural icon.
