Von Batten, Nigerian-born Atiku lobbyist under fire.

Von Batten, who signed on behalf of lobbying firm Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C., became widely known in Nigeria after the firm secured a $1.2 million annual contract to provide government affairs, strategic advisory and reputational management services for Atiku in the United States.
The agreement, reportedly filed under the United States Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), was signed in March and registered in April 2026. While the financial value and political implications of the deal initially dominated public discussions, attention has increasingly shifted towards the background of the man representing the lobbying firm.
A recent report by TheCable highlighted variations in the names used by Von Batten in different professional and official records.
According to the report, his LinkedIn profile lists his full name as Karl-Marx Edward Ikemefuna William George Okeke-Von Batten. However, he has reportedly used different variations of the name in separate official filings, including Karl Von Batten and Karl-Marx Okeke-Von Batten.
The reasons behind the different versions of his name remain unclear, and TheCable said it had reached out to Von Batten for clarification regarding his identity and background.
Questions have also been raised about his educational history.
Von Batten’s LinkedIn profile reportedly lists several prominent institutions, including the University of Oxford, Columbia University, Harvard University and the New York Institute of Technology.
However, a professional profile obtained from a 2018 District of Columbia legislative record reportedly contains a different combination of academic qualifications and institutions.
TheCable reported that it had contacted the institutions listed across Von Batten’s professional records and LinkedIn profile to verify his attendance and other relevant details.
Beyond the questions surrounding his background, Von Batten has built a career spanning lobbying, public policy and international affairs.
His professional profile indicates that he has served in the United States military and held positions connected to several US government institutions, including the Department of Health and Human Services, the Office of the US Global AIDS Coordinator and Health Diplomacy, the Department of Defence and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Von Batten has also been involved in lobbying engagements connected to several African countries and political interests.
His firm has reportedly handled contracts involving Somalia and Burundi, while he has also been linked to lobbying efforts concerning the Democratic Republic of Congo and its conflict with neighbouring Rwanda.
In a social media post published in 2025, Von Batten said the September 11, 2001 attacks influenced his decision to join the US military. He described himself as an immigrant and investment banker working at the World Trade Centre when the attacks occurred.
However, the recent scrutiny surrounding his identity, academic claims and professional records has added another dimension to the public conversation about his role as a lobbyist for Atiku.
As of the time of the report, some of the questions raised about Von Batten’s background remained unresolved, with TheCable awaiting responses from the institutions and individuals contacted for clarification.
The development has placed the Nigerian-born lobbyist firmly in the spotlight, particularly as political activities and discussions surrounding Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election continue to intensify.
The case also highlights the increasing role of international lobbying firms in Nigerian political affairs, where reputation management, foreign policy engagement and international perception are becoming increasingly important parts of political strategy.
