Four Dead, Four Rescued as Building Collapses in Ilorin

Four people have been confirmed dead following the collapse of a building in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Tuesday.
The incident occurred in the early hours of the day at the Popo-Giwa/Abemi area of Ilorin West Local Government Area, near Masalasi Gogoro.
Eight people were initially trapped after a section of the building collapsed, prompting an emergency search-and-rescue operation.
The Kwara State Fire Service, alongside other emergency agencies, responded to the incident and began efforts to rescue those trapped beneath the rubble.
Four victims were rescued alive and taken to hospital for treatment, while four others were recovered dead, according to emergency officials.
Reports indicate that the affected building had several rooms, with a portion of the structure collapsing and trapping occupants inside.
The rescue operation involved the Kwara State Fire Service, Federal Fire Service, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, police, medical personnel and other emergency responders.
Authorities have yet to provide a final determination on the cause of the collapse. However, officials said the remaining structure would be assessed to determine its safety.
The incident has renewed concerns over building safety and the importance of regular structural assessments, particularly where signs of weakness or defects are observed.
Residents and property owners have been advised to promptly report visible cracks and other signs of structural failure to relevant authorities.
