Catholic Priest Collapses, Dies While Delivering New Year Homily in Delta

A Catholic priest has reportedly died after collapsing while delivering a New Year Day homily in Delta State.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 1, 2026, during the New Year Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Agbor, where the priest was officiating.
Eyewitnesses said the priest, identified as Rev. Fr. Steve Chukwuma, suddenly slumped at the pulpit while preaching, causing panic among worshippers. He was immediately rushed for medical attention but was later confirmed dead.
The late priest was said to be 63 years old and had served in the Catholic priesthood for over three decades, dedicating his life to pastoral and community service.
Following the incident, the church congregation was thrown into mourning, with parishioners describing the priest as a devoted and committed servant of God.
As of the time of filing this report, the Catholic Diocese has yet to issue an official statement on the cause of death.
