Boko Haram Attacks APC Governorship Candidate’s Convoy in Borno

By Peace Erewunmi

The convoy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Borno State, Mustapha Gubio, has come under attack by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists.

The incident occurred on Thursday along the Kareto–Damasak Road in northern Borno State as Gubio and members of his entourage travelled to Damasak for a thank-you visit to APC supporters following his emergence as the party’s consensus governorship candidate.

According to security sources, the convoy came under attack at about 2:30 p.m. near Kareto community.

The attackers reportedly used an improvised explosive device (IED) and rocket-propelled grenades before opening fire on the convoy.

Security personnel attached to the convoy, including soldiers, police officers, NSCDC personnel, DSS operatives, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force and vigilantes, responded to the attack and forced the terrorists to retreat into the surrounding bush.

The Nigeria Police Force confirmed the incident, saying its tactical operatives successfully counter-engaged the attackers and subsequently searched and cleared the area to prevent possible secondary explosive attacks.

A police armoured vehicle was reportedly damaged during the attack.

Despite the intensity of the assault, authorities said no member of the convoy was killed or injured. The convoy was safely evacuated to a secure location and later continued its journey.

The attack has renewed concerns over security along the Gubio–Kareto–Damasak corridor, an area that has experienced repeated attacks by insurgent groups.

The incident also comes as political activities begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, raising concerns about the safety of politicians and their supporters travelling through areas affected by insurgency.

Authorities have not announced any arrests in connection with the attack, while security agencies continue efforts to track down the assailants.
