President Tinubu Orders Re-opening of Nigeria-Benin Border

By Erewunmi Peace

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reopening of the Nigeria–Benin border at the Tsamiya crossing in Kebbi State to facilitate trade and improve movement of goods between the two countries.

The Nigeria Customs Service confirmed that the reopening aims to boost regional commerce, especially in agricultural produce and other commercial goods, while ensuring strict monitoring to prevent smuggling and illegal activities.

Officials said the move will help reduce congestion, improve the efficiency of cross-border trade, and create opportunities for local traders who have long been affected by the border closure. Customs authorities assured that technology-driven monitoring and security measures would be put in place to safeguard legitimate trade.

The Tsamiya border crossing, which was closed in 2019 as part of broader border security policies, is a key trade route connecting northern Nigeria to Benin. Its reopening marks a significant step toward revitalizing trade relations and supporting economic growth in the region.

Government sources said the reopening is part of a series of measures to encourage legal trade, curb smuggling, and strengthen regional cooperation between Nigeria and neighboring countries.
