2027: INEC Warns Politicians, Parties of Fines, Jail Over Abusive Campaigns
By Peace Erewunmi
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned political parties and candidates against using abusive, inflammatory or threatening language during campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC said campaign rhetoric that crosses the line into hate speech, intimidation, threats of violence or coercion could attract sanctions under the Electoral Act 2026.
The warning was issued by Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, who said political campaigns should remain within the limits of the law.
According to Oketola, Section 96 of the Electoral Act 2026 prohibits campaign language capable of provoking violent reactions or injuring ethnic, religious, tribal or sectional sentiments.
He explained that threats of physical harm, economic retaliation or social exclusion intended to influence voters or suppress political support could amount to electoral intimidation.
Under Section 96(7), a candidate convicted of the offence may face a maximum fine of ₦5 million or 12 months’ imprisonment.
Political parties found in violation face a ₦10 million fine for a first offence and ₦2 million for subsequent offences, according to INEC.
Oketola stressed that INEC is responsible for monitoring political campaigns and enforcing compliance with the relevant electoral rules, while security agencies have separate responsibilities concerning public order and the security of political rallies.
He also urged the media, traditional rulers and religious leaders to help discourage politicians from making statements capable of provoking violence.
INEC maintained that political campaigns should focus on competing ideas and policies rather than threats, intimidation or incitement as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
