Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has explained his decision to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election, despite previously backing Peter Obi.

Ortom spoke during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, where he described his support for Tinubu as a deliberate political decision.

The former governor, who was one of the prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party’s G5 governors ahead of the 2023 election, had previously supported Obi during the last presidential election.

However, as preparations for the 2027 election intensify, Ortom has now aligned himself with Tinubu, explaining the factors behind his political choice.

His position adds to the growing realignment among political figures ahead of the 2027 presidential contest, with politicians and political groups increasingly declaring support for different candidates.

Peter Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election on the Labour Party platform, is now seeking the presidency under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) platform.

Ortom’s declaration is expected to attract attention in Benue and across the wider Middle Belt, particularly given his previous political relationship with both the PDP and Obi.

The 2027 presidential race is already witnessing significant political movements as parties, candidates and influential political figures position themselves ahead of the election.
