Nigeria Needs One Long-Term Development Plan, Not Constant Changes — Showunmi
By Peace Erewunmi
Peoples Democratic Party chieftain and Ogun State governorship aspirant, Segun Showunmi, has called for a consistent, long-term development plan for Nigeria, arguing that frequent changes in government policies and development strategies are slowing the country’s progress.
Showunmi said Nigeria needs a national development framework that can survive changes in administration and remain focused on long-term economic growth, infrastructure, human capital development and improved living standards.
According to him, development should not be treated as a series of short-term projects tied to individual administrations. Instead, successive governments should build on an agreed national vision and measure their performance against clearly defined targets.
He argued that countries achieve sustainable development when policies and institutions have continuity, rather than being repeatedly abandoned whenever a new administration assumes office.
Showunmi has previously advocated for long-term planning and stronger institutions, arguing that Ogun State, for example, needs a development strategy that goes beyond individual governors and political cycles.
He maintained that Nigeria’s development challenges require deliberate planning, effective implementation and consistency, rather than constant changes in direction.
The PDP chieftain’s position comes amid renewed discussions about how Nigeria can achieve sustainable economic growth and ensure that development policies produce measurable improvements in the lives of citizens.
For Showunmi, the priority should be to establish a clear national direction, maintain continuity across administrations and ensure that government plans translate into tangible results for Nigerians.
