FG Confirms NECO’s Transition to Computer-Based Examinations by 2026

By Erewunmi Peace

The Federal Government has announced plans for the National Examinations Council (NECO) to transition to computer-based examinations as part of efforts to modernise Nigeria’s education and assessment system.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Education during activities marking NECO’s anniversary celebration in Abuja.

According to the government, the move to computer-based testing (CBT) is aimed at improving the credibility, efficiency, and security of examinations across the country.

Officials explained that the reform is expected to help reduce examination malpractice, enhance monitoring processes, and improve the overall administration of examinations.

The transition is expected to be implemented gradually, with broader adoption targeted for 2026.

The development follows the increasing use of computer-based examinations by other national examination bodies, including the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Education stakeholders say the initiative could strengthen transparency within the examination system, although concerns remain about access to digital infrastructure and computer literacy in some areas.

The government assured that necessary preparations and support systems would be put in place to ensure a smooth transition for students and schools nationwide.

Further details on implementation guidelines and timelines are expected to be released by NECO and the Federal Ministry of Education.
