Lagos Attorney-General Moves to Decongest Courts, Protect Tenants and Landlords
By Erewunmi Peace
The Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro (SAN), has announced a set of reforms aimed at decongesting the courts and safeguarding the rights of both tenants and landlords in Lagos State.
Speaking on the initiative, Pedro highlighted the need to reduce prolonged court delays, particularly in tenancy and civil cases, some of which can last for several years.
He emphasized that the current situation is unacceptable and unsustainable, and that the new measures are designed to ensure faster dispute resolution.
Key reforms include:
- Legislative proposals to limit the duration of tenancy and civil disputes in court
- Digital case tracking systems to monitor defendants and reduce delays
- Expansion of plea bargaining and mediation services
- Strengthened legal aid support for tenants and landlords
These measures are part of broader justice sector reforms in Lagos, aimed at improving access to justice, reducing case backlogs, and making the legal system more efficient for residents.
Attorney-General Pedro also called for collaboration from landlords, tenants, and legal practitioners to ensure the successful implementation of the reforms.
