There was relief and celebration in parts of Kaduna State as abducted schoolchildren and other victims regained their freedom after spending 36 days in captivity.

The victims, including six schoolchildren, their driver, and other passengers, were abducted on April 26, 2026, when armed men attacked a vehicle travelling along the Akwando–Kachia road in Kachia Local Government Area.

Community leaders confirmed that the victims returned home safely after weeks in captivity, bringing an end to a difficult ordeal that had caused anxiety among families and residents.

According to local sources, the abductees endured harsh conditions during their captivity and were forced to travel through remote areas before eventually regaining their freedom.

Residents welcomed the victims back with joy, while family members expressed gratitude for. their safe return after more than a month of uncertainty.

Community leaders also called for psychological and medical support for the released victims, noting that prolonged captivity can leave emotional and mental scars, particularly on children.

The incident highlights the continuing security challenges facing several communities in northern Nigeria, where kidnappings and attacks by armed groups remain a major concern.

Stakeholders have urged security agencies to intensify efforts to prevent future abductions and improve the safety of travellers, students, and rural communities.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not released full details regarding the circumstances surrounding the victims’ release, while residents continued to celebrate their safe return.
