OPay is facing backlash from some Nigerian users over its reported decision to feature betting and gambling applications on its platform.

The criticism followed the reported rollout of a “game centre” within the OPay app, giving users access to multiple betting platforms, including Aviator.

Some users and social media commentators have expressed concern that integrating betting services into an everyday financial application could make gambling more accessible, particularly to young Nigerians.

Critics argue that financial platforms should encourage responsible money management, savings and investment rather than provide direct access to gambling services.

One commentator called on the Federal Government to consider regulatory action against the move, warning that increased access to betting could worsen gambling addiction and its financial and social consequences.

The controversy comes amid wider concerns in Nigeria over gambling addiction and the growing accessibility of online betting platforms.

According to reports, OPay has since removed the reported game-centre feature from its platform. The company had not publicly responded to the specific criticism at the time of the report.

The development has renewed calls for stronger safeguards around gambling products, particularly where they are integrated into platforms used for everyday financial transactions.
