Cardiologist Warns That Sugary Drinks Increase Risk of Heart Disease

By Erewunmi Peace

A consultant cardiologist at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, Dr. Abubakar Sani, has warned that excessive consumption of sugary drinks significantly increases the risk of heart disease and other related health problems.

Dr. Sani gave the warning during an interview on Monday, where he expressed concern over the growing intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, especially among children and young adults.

According to him, frequent consumption of sugary drinks contributes to obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, which are major causes of preventable deaths globally.

He explained that many people underestimate the health risks associated with soft drinks, energy drinks, and other sugar-laden beverages, often consuming them daily without moderation.

The cardiologist advised parents and guardians to limit the inclusion of sugary drinks in children’s diets, particularly in school lunches, and instead encourage healthier alternatives such as water and natural fruit options.

Dr. Sani further urged the public to adopt healthier lifestyles through balanced diets and regular physical activity, noting that prevention remains the most effective approach to reducing heart disease risk.
