Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), Prof. Tunji Olaopa, has called for major reforms aimed at strengthening merit, professionalism, and efficiency within Nigeria’s civil service system.

In a policy presentation titled “Reinventing Civil Service Commission as Guardian of Merit and Professionalism,” Olaopa stressed the need for the Civil Service Commission to remain independent and free from political interference.

According to him, merit-based recruitment, promotion, and discipline are essential to restoring professionalism and improving public service delivery across government institutions.

The FCSC chairman noted that excessive politicisation, poor funding, weak institutional structures, and outdated administrative systems had negatively affected the effectiveness of the civil service over the years.

He also advocated digital reforms and improved human resource management systems to modernise the operations of the commission and improve transparency.

Olaopa explained that the Federal Civil Service Commission was working on strategic reforms that would reposition the civil service into a more efficient, technology-driven, and performance-based institution.
