Thirteen people have been rescued after a residential building collapsed in the Dan Dishe area of Kwanar Yashi, Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State, in the early hours of Saturday.

The incident reportedly left 16 people injured, according to the Kano State Fire Service. The agency said its Emergency Response Unit received a distress call at about 4:32 a.m. and immediately deployed personnel to the scene.

The collapsed building was said to measure approximately 20 by 30 feet. Fire service officials disclosed that 13 victims were pulled from the rubble, with 10 rescued alive and three found unconscious.

Among those rescued alive were Al-Mustapha Yusuf, 15; Khadija Yusuf, seven; Ummusalama Yusuf, 10; Madina Yusuf, six; and Hafsat Yusuf, nine. The three unconscious victims were identified as Affan Yusuf, five; Hassana Yusuf, seven; and Ummulkursum Yusuf, nine months old. Eight other survivors could not immediately be identified.

The victims were subsequently handed over to Usman Ibrahim, identified as their father’s brother, for further medical attention and care.

The cause of the building collapse has not yet been established. The Kano State Fire Service said an investigation is ongoing to determine what led to the incident.

The agency urged residents to remain vigilant, particularly during the rainy season, and to promptly report signs of structural weakness to the relevant authorities to help prevent similar tragedies.
