Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, received the body of former President Muhammadu Buhari today at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina, marking the beginning of solemn funeral proceedings for the late Nigerian leader.
The body of Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London after a brief illness, was flown into the country aboard a presidential aircraft. Accompanying the casket were family members, close aides, and Nigerian embassy officials from the UK.
President Tinubu, alongside Vice President Kashim Shettima, governors, service chiefs, and other top government functionaries, stood in solemn tribute as Buhari’s remains were received with full national honors.
A brief ceremony was held at the airport, followed by the transfer of the body to Daura, Buhari’s hometown in Katsina State, where burial rites in accordance with Islamic customs are scheduled to take place later today.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military Head of State (1983–1985) and later as a democratically elected President (2015–2023), will be remembered for his firm stance on anti-corruption, security reforms, and infrastructural development.
The Federal Government has announced a three-day national mourning period, with flags flying at half-mast in honor of the late statesman.
Further details of funeral arrangements and tributes from world leaders are expected to follow.
