The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the rescue of 16 passengers who were abducted by gunmen along the Benin–Auchi highway on Friday evening.

Spokesperson of the command, Moses Yamu, said the victims were freed following a joint rescue operation involving the police, military, local vigilantes, and hunters.

How the Abduction Happened

The incident occurred near the Sobe axis when suspected bandits ambushed an 18-seater commercial bus belonging to New Edo Line Transport Company, alongside two other vehicles. The attackers reportedly forced passengers into the surrounding bush.

According to initial reports, 29 passengers were abducted, though official figures remain unclear.

Successful Rescue

Mr. Yamu confirmed that 16 passengers have been rescued unhurt, while efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining victims.

He assured the public that security operatives remain on ground combing the forest to flush out the criminals and bring the situation under control.

Security on Edo Highways

The Benin–Auchi road has in recent years witnessed repeated cases of abduction and armed robbery, raising safety concerns for commuters. Friday’s attack sparked renewed calls for stronger security measures across the state’s major highways.

Authorities are urging residents to remain calm, assuring that the government and security agencies are working to restore safety along the affected route.
