The Nigerian Senate, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has announced a reshuffle of several key standing committees in response to increasing national security concerns. The move aims to strengthen legislative oversight and improve coordination in addressing threats such as insurgency, banditry, and communal violence.

Under the reconstitution:

Senator Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi State) is now Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence.

Senator Osita Ngwu has been appointed Acting Chairman of the Senate Committee on Air Force.

Senator Mustafa Musa leads the Committee on National Planning.

Senator Shehu Buba has been redeployed to head the Committee on Livestock and Animal Husbandry.

Senate leadership emphasized that the reshuffle is part of ongoing efforts to ensure that legislative oversight of security and related sectors is effective, timely, and responsive to the country’s current security landscape.

Political observers note that this reshuffle signals a commitment by lawmakers to enhance accountability of security agencies and align national planning with the country’s security needs. It also underscores the Senate’s intent to provide robust supervision and guidance to government policies aimed at curbing insecurity.
