The academic and public service community mourns the passing of Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, the Pro‑Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), who died on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at the age of 64.

His death was confirmed by the family, and he was laid to rest the same day in his hometown of Ede, Osun State, following Islamic funeral rites.

Professor Oyeweso was celebrated for his outstanding contributions to historical research, teaching, and university governance. Throughout his career, he mentored generations of students and played a pivotal role in strengthening academic institutions in Nigeria.

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State expressed his condolences to the professor’s family and the OAU community, describing Oyeweso’s passing as a significant loss for the state and nation.

In a tribute titled “Our drum has been soaked in rainwater,” scholars and colleagues remembered Professor Oyeweso for his wisdom, humility, and commitment to education. His influence extends beyond academia into public service, making him a respected figure in both scholarly and civic circles.

Professor Oyeweso is survived by his wife, children, and extended family.
