Nigeria, UAE Scrap Tariffs on Over 13,000 Goods to Boost Trade

In a historic move to deepen economic ties, Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have agreed to scrap tariffs on over 13,000 goods traded between the two countries.
The agreement, signed during the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, was witnessed by Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. It is part of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) aimed at expanding market access and boosting bilateral trade.
Under the deal:
Nigeria will remove tariffs on about 6,243 products imported from the UAE.
The UAE will remove tariffs on about 7,315 Nigerian goods.
The agreement is expected to support Nigerian exporters, particularly in non-oil sectors, while giving businesses from both countries boarded market access. Trade analysts believe this could significantly increase economic activity, promote investment, and strengthen diplomatic ties.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of diversifying Nigeria’s economy and increasing export opportunities. “This historic agreement opens new avenues for Nigerian businesses and strengthens our partnership with a leading global trading hub,” he said.
Industry observers note that the tariff-free arrangement will make Nigerian goods more competitive in the UAE market, attract foreign investment, and encourage local manufacturers to expand production.
The CEPA between Nigeria and the UAE marks a key milestone in Africa–Middle East trade relations, signaling stronger collaboration and economic growth potential for both nations.
