The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced the recall of specific batches of Aptamil and Cow & Gate infant and follow-on milk formulas over concerns of possible contamination.

According to the agency, the recall follows a notification from the manufacturer, Danone Nutricia, regarding the potential presence of cereulide, a toxin produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus. The toxin can cause foodborne illness, particularly posing risks to infants and young children.

Reason for the Recall

NAFDAC explained that the recall is a precautionary safety measure aimed at protecting public health.

Exposure to cereulide may lead to symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. As a result, affected batches are being withdrawn from circulation

Products Affected

The recall covers certain batches of:

• Aptamil Infant Formula
• Aptamil Follow-On Milk
• Cow & Gate Infant Formula
• Cow & Gate Follow-On Milk

Consumers are advised to carefully check product batch numbers and expiry dates as stated in NAFDAC’s official notice.

Clarification for Nigerian Consumers

NAFDAC also clarified that Aptamil products specifically manufactured and registered for the Nigerian market are not affected by the recall and remain safe for consumption.

What Consumers Should Do

• Parents and caregivers should immediately stop using any affected batch.
• Retailers are advised to remove the listed products from shelves.
• Any adverse reactions or sightings of unregistered products should be reported to NAFDAC.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring food safety and protecting public health across Nigeria.
