The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has introduced four digital payment options as part of a new cashless policy aimed at improving transparency and efficiency at Nigerian airports.

The policy, which affects several airport services including toll gates and parking facilities, is designed to reduce the use of cash transactions and promote secure electronic payments.

According to FAAN, airport users can now make payments through four approved channels. These include annual electronic tags (E-Tags) for frequent users, VIP access stickers, bank-issued ATM or contactless cards, and FAAN-issued prepaid cards available at designated points within the airports.

The authority said the move is part of broader efforts to modernize airport operations, improve revenue collection, and reduce the risks associated with cash handling.

However, the rollout of the cashless system has sparked mixed reactions among travellers and drivers. In some airports, the policy reportedly led to temporary traffic congestion as users adjusted to the new payment methods.

Industry observers believe that while the transition to digital payments is a step toward modernization, adequate infrastructure and public awareness will be crucial to ensure a smooth implementation.

The development comes as the Nigerian aviation sector continues to adopt technological solutions to enhance service delivery and operational efficiency.
