Xenophobia: 130 Nigerians Register for Voluntary Evacuation from South Africa

By Erewunmi Peace

No fewer than 130 Nigerians residing in South Africa have registered for voluntary evacuation back to Nigeria following renewed xenophobic tensions in parts of the country.

The development comes amid reports of anti-immigrant protests and rising concerns over the safety of foreign nationals, including Nigerians, in affected areas.

Officials from Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the evacuation process is voluntary and is being coordinated to ensure the safe return of interested citizens.

Authorities noted that the number of Nigerians seeking evacuation may increase as more individuals express concerns about their safety.

The Nigerian government has also engaged South African authorities, calling for adequate protection of its citizens and urging calm amid the situation.

Observers say the move reflects ongoing concerns about xenophobic incidents in South Africa, which have occurred periodically over the years.

Further updates are expected as arrangements for the evacuation continue and diplomatic engagements progress.
