Lagos Rejects JAMB’s 150 Cut-Off Mark, Insists on 185 Minimum for State Universities

The Lagos State Government has announced that candidates who score below 185 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will not be considered for admission into state-owned universities.
The position was made known following recent discussions on admission benchmarks approved by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for tertiary institutions across the country.
While JAMB approved 150 as the national minimum cut-off mark for universities, Lagos State authorities stated that its universities would maintain a higher admission standard.
According to the state government, the decision is aimed at preserving academic quality and competitiveness within its higher institutions.
Officials explained that although JAMB provides a general benchmark, individual universities and state governments are permitted to adopt higher cut-off marks based on their academic policies and institutional capacity.
The development means candidates seeking admission into Lagos State-owned universities will be expected to meet the 185 minimum score requirement before being considered for admission.
The announcement has generated reactions among students, parents, and education stakeholders as admission processes for the new academic session begin nationwide.
Further guidelines on admission procedures are expected to be released by the affected institutions in the coming weeks.
