A new report by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has raised concerns over the level of insecurity in Nigeria, estimating that about 30,000 armed Fulani militants are operating across various parts of the country.

The report, titled “Nonstate Violators of Religious Freedom in Nigeria: Fulani Militants,” said the groups operate in small and large cells ranging from about 10 to 1,000 fighters, carrying out coordinated attacks in several regions.

According to USCIRF, the activities of these armed groups have contributed to violence, displacement of civilians, and rising insecurity, particularly in parts of the Middle Belt and other rural communities.

The commission noted that the militants are part of broader non-state actors involved in violent attacks affecting both Christian and Muslim communities in Nigeria.

It added that the situation has worsened over time due to weak security responses and continued attacks in affected regions.

The report also highlighted concerns about rising humanitarian impacts, including displacement of populations and destruction of livelihoods in affected communities.

As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Government of Nigeria has not issued a formal response to the latest USCIRF report.
