The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed that 20 people lost their lives following an attack on Kawel Community in Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area of the state. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday when armed assailants reportedly invaded the community and opened fire on residents.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Alfred Alabo, 18 victims were confirmed dead at the scene, while two others later died from injuries sustained during the attack. He described the incident as tragic and assured residents that security agencies are intensifying efforts to apprehend those responsible.

The police spokesperson stated that upon receiving a distress call, the Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, directed the Divisional Police Officer in Bokkos to immediately mobilise officers to the affected community. Police operatives, working alongside the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) and other security agencies, reportedly engaged the attackers in a gun battle, forcing them to retreat.

Authorities said no arrests had been made as of the time of filing this report, but investigations and security operations are ongoing to track down the perpetrators. The remains of the victims have since been released to their families for burial.

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang expressed concern over the attack and directed emergency management and humanitarian agencies to provide immediate assistance to affected families and survivors.

The latest incident adds to a series of violent attacks that have affected parts of Plateau State in recent months, raising fresh concerns about security in the region. Community leaders and residents have continued to call for stronger security measures to prevent further loss of lives and property.

Security agencies have assured residents that efforts are being intensified to restore calm and bring those behind the attack to justice.
