Northern Nigeria a ‘Conquered Society’ – Mahdi Shehu
By Peace Erewunmi
Public affairs commentator and political analyst, Mahdi Shehu, has described Northern Nigeria as a “conquered society,” citing worsening insecurity, poverty, hunger, and what he considers a failure of leadership across the region.
Speaking on issues affecting the region, Shehu argued that decades of poor governance, political complacency, and social challenges have left many northern communities vulnerable to violence, economic hardship, and underdevelopment. He claimed that the region has suffered severe setbacks due to insecurity, including banditry, terrorism, kidnappings, and communal conflicts.
According to him, increasing levels of hunger, unemployment, displacement, and the collapse of critical infrastructure are indicators that Northern Nigeria is facing a deep social and economic crisis. He warned that unless urgent corrective measures are taken, the region could continue to lose its influence and developmental prospects.
Shehu also criticized what he described as the silence and inaction of some political, traditional, and community leaders in addressing the region’s challenges. He maintained that meaningful reforms, accountability, and citizen engagement are necessary to reverse the current trend.
His remarks have generated mixed reactions among Nigerians. While some supporters agree that insecurity and poverty remain major concerns requiring urgent action, critics argue that his comments are overly pessimistic and fail to acknowledge ongoing efforts by governments, security agencies, and community groups to improve conditions in the region.
Northern Nigeria has continued to face significant security challenges in recent years, with authorities implementing various military and non-military measures aimed at restoring peace, supporting affected communities, and promoting economic recovery.
As debate continues over the future of the region, Shehu’s comments have once again brought attention to the need for sustainable solutions to insecurity, poverty, education deficits, and governance challenges across Northern Nigeria.
