Fresh concerns have emerged over political violence in Osun State after a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Taofeek Mustapha, was reportedly shot during an attack by suspected political thugs in Osogbo, the state capital. The incident occurred in the Oluode-Aranyin area on Saturday, further heightening tensions ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
According to reports, the victim sustained gunshot injuries during the attack and was rushed for medical attention. The latest incident adds to growing concerns about security and political rivalry in the state as campaigns for the forthcoming election intensify.
The spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the shooting and stated that an investigation has commenced to identify those responsible and bring them to justice. Security agencies have assured residents that efforts are ongoing to maintain law and order across the state.
The attack comes despite recent efforts by security agencies, electoral stakeholders, and political actors to promote peaceful campaigns and prevent election-related violence. Authorities had previously convened meetings aimed at securing commitments from political parties to conduct their activities peacefully ahead of the governorship poll.
Political observers have expressed concern that recurring clashes and violent incidents could undermine voter confidence and threaten the peaceful conduct of the election. They have called on all parties and supporters to respect democratic principles and avoid actions capable of escalating tensions.
Osun State is scheduled to hold its governorship election on August 15, 2026, with major political parties intensifying campaigns across the state. The election is expected to be closely contested, making security a key priority for electoral authorities and law enforcement agencies.
Residents and civil society groups have urged security agencies to remain vigilant and ensure that those responsible for acts of violence are held accountable, stressing that peaceful elections are essential for the state’s democratic development.
