Residents Count Losses as Floods Hit Lagos

By Peace Erewunmi

Residents across several communities in Lagos State are counting their losses after persistent and heavy rainfall triggered widespread flooding, submerging homes, roads, shops, and business premises while disrupting daily activities across the state. The flooding, which followed hours of intense rainfall, left many families stranded and caused significant damage to property and livelihoods.

Affected residents reported that floodwaters invaded homes, destroyed household items, damaged vehicles, and forced some families to temporarily relocate. Business owners also lamented losses resulting from water damage to goods and equipment, while several schools and commercial activities were disrupted in flood-prone areas.

Many roads became impassable as floodwaters overwhelmed drainage systems, leading to severe traffic congestion and delays for commuters. Motorists were forced to abandon vehicles in some locations, while pedestrians struggled to navigate flooded streets.

Residents of affected communities attributed the recurring flooding to blocked drainage channels, poor waste disposal practices, inadequate drainage infrastructure, and rapid urban development. They called on government authorities to intensify efforts to clear waterways and improve flood-control infrastructure across vulnerable areas.

The Lagos State Government had earlier warned residents about the possibility of heavy rainfall, flash floods, and rising water levels during the peak of the rainy season. Authorities advised residents living in low-lying areas to remain alert and take precautionary measures to protect lives and property.

Environmental experts note that Lagos remains particularly vulnerable to flooding due to its coastal location, rapid population growth, urbanization pressures, and climate-related weather patterns. They emphasize the need for long-term investments in drainage systems, urban planning, and environmental management to reduce the impact of future flooding incidents.

As cleanup efforts continue, affected residents are appealing for assistance and urgent government intervention to address damaged infrastructure and prevent similar occurrences in the future. Many say the recurring floods have become a major economic and social burden, especially for households and small businesses already facing difficult economic conditions.A
