At least 27 people have been killed in fresh attacks across Plateau and Benue states, further heightening concerns over the persistent security challenges facing communities in Nigeria’s North-Central region.

In Plateau State, armed attackers reportedly invaded Wereng-Camp and Kum communities in Riyom Local Government Area late Saturday, killing nine members of the same family, including a child. Another resident sustained serious injuries and is receiving medical treatment.

In Benue State, separate attacks in Otukpo Local Government Area claimed the lives of at least 18 people. Reports indicate that the violence began with the killing of two farmers before gunmen launched another deadly assault on Otukpo-Nobi community, leaving several others injured and causing widespread panic among residents.

The renewed violence has triggered fresh concerns over the worsening security situation in the region, with community leaders and residents calling for stronger measures to protect lives and property. Many have urged security agencies to intensify intelligence gathering, increase patrols in vulnerable communities, and ensure that those responsible for the attacks are brought to justice.

The attacks have also drawn reactions from political leaders and civil society groups, who have called on the Federal Government to move beyond routine condemnations and adopt more proactive security strategies to prevent further loss of lives.

As security agencies continue investigations and reinforce affected areas, residents remain anxious, with many fearing further attacks in communities already grappling with recurring violence.
